Fantastic Email Hunt
My letter box ended up chock-full of the non personalised junk and semi-junk mail this morning. 19 items altogether! All shapes and sizes. And not a single handwritten private correspondence to me. As I sorted all the way through those simple brown, ordinary white and various brightly colored envelopes I realised that what I was really looking forward to had been that highly personalised hand written letter from a close friend or relative. Something intimate. Some thing extremely personal. My pile of junk mail just does not have the exhilaration of opening those personalised hand written letters.
Those hand written letters that include just about all the latest fascinating news and activities in their lives. The kinds you tear open and have difficulty with the handwriting. Having to browse through more than a few times in order to digest all that scrumptious news. When I realised that I get fewer and fewer of these kinds of personalised letters in my life a sense of disappointment came over me. I’m so much more dependent on e-mails to be able to stay in contact with close friends as well as loved ones.
And then I began to think just how much easier emails have made keeping in touch. They are fast, even instant, and don’t have the trouble or inconvenience of searching for an envelope, stamp and finally posting it when I’m next at the stores. You have a thought or idea you want to talk about and you can just whisk off another brief e mail note to a friend. Virtually like having an ongoing chat.
The idea then occurred to me that if that is the way I remain in contact with my friends as well as relatives then perhaps this is occurring to a good deal of people. Most likely people I have lost contact with over the years are extremely active on the e mail scene? Possibly this could end up being a wonderful way to restore old friends if you could simply lookup an e-mail address for that person. I could just look up their e mail address rather than looking for their new postal address after they relocated yet again. I could up date my e-mail address book precisely like I did my old address book. As we all know just about 1 in 5 of us move each year and maintaining our address book updated can be quite time consuming.
I e mailed my friends later that morning with regards to how unhappy I was with my stack of junk mail and how I had keenly looked for that handwritten letter. This discussion went backwards and forwards for a while until someone said that emails had in fact got her back in touch with friends she had lost contact with over the years. Apparently she had received people’s e mail details over the Word wide web. She typed their name in and back came their e-mail address with a confirming address and telephone number.
So that is my task for this week. I’m writing out a list of people I would like to get in touch with once more and I’m going to give it to her and see if she can come up with their e-mail addresses so I can renew our friendships. Perhaps I’ll start with six? I’m excited. What about you?
